Biography

Whether your association with Steve Puleo is as a vocalist, a drummer, percussionist, composer, producer, or any of the other "hats" he's been known to wear, you'll find a musician’s musician, and an inspirational friend. With over 40 years of experience in a wide range of musical styles, from clubs to churches, from studios to stadiums, from the U.S. to Europe, Steve continues to build a track record of integrity and uniqueness.

“I’m the son of two NY jazz musicians. My father was a wonderful guitarist, and my mom, who I’ve dedicated my latest recording project to, was a great singer. Their influence was paramount in my musical journey. My mom was one of those “live radio” singers of the 40’s and 50’s at Radio City Music Hall, introducing new songs to the public. She was a regular on the Vic Damone show, and worked with many big bands, including Buddy Rich. Although she passed away a year and a half ago, I was able to capture her voice on one of the tunes on my Smile cd, The Nearness Of You.”

“My family moved from New York to San Francisco in 1959 when I was 5 years old. My uncle worked at the Black Hawk in the city, where many jazz greats played and recorded, and where I hung out as a child. It was there that I received my first pair of drumsticks from the great Philly Joe Jones when he was with Miles Davis. By the time I was 15 years old, I was playing drums professionally.”

“After a few years in the Air Force Band as a drummer and vocalist, I attended Sonoma State University where my friend, the late Walt Oster, directed the jazz department. The next several years I worked at a studio in San Francisco and freelanced in various musical situations, sessions, clubs and touring.”

“I’ve been involved primarily in gospel music for the past 30 years, but have recently returned to my jazz roots to record the first in a series of projects; an album very appropriately entitled ‘Smile.’”

He’s a performer, producer, recording artist, and pastor. Steve and his wife Karin reside in Sonoma County, California.
